Bank account and phone in Korea on an E-2: the easy setup order

You can open both once your ARC arrives. The card fee itself is now ₩35,000, and processing time is genuinely inconsistent: anywhere from two weeks to well over a month, depending on your office.

Most hagwons pay on the 10th or the 25th. If you land mid-month, you're looking at a stretch with no Korean income at all. You'll need won, a way for your school to reach you, and somewhere to put the rest of your money, and all three depend on one card: the Alien Registration Card, or ARC.

The ARC is the bottleneck

You cannot open a Korean bank account, sign a postpaid phone contract, or enrol in national health insurance without it. Two things changed here that are worth knowing before you land.

First, the fee went up. The card cost rose from 30,000 won to 35,000 won, effective January 1, 2025, because a chip-embedded card was introduced to support the mobile ARC, and the higher production cost pushed the issuance fee up. Existing cards weren't affected: anyone with a card issued before that date can keep using it without replacing it.

Second, the wait time. This is genuinely inconsistent across offices, and we couldn't find one government-published average that covers everyone. What we did find gives you a sense of the spread: one labor law firm's guide to the process puts it at two to three weeks in the best case, three to four weeks in the worst, while a university international office tells its own students to expect up to five or six weeks from application. Treat two weeks as optimistic and a month as normal. Check your specific office's current wait times on HiKorea or by calling 1345 before you plan around it; this is the one number worth confirming yourself rather than trusting an article.

Banking, once you have the card

Bring your passport, your ARC, and a phone number. Shinhan, Woori, and KB Kookmin remain the usual choices for foreign teachers because of branch density and, sometimes, an English-speaking staff member. You'll typically walk out with a debit card and a bankbook the same day. International transfers home are still often a branch visit with paperwork at the big banks; most teachers route around this with a service like Wise once the account is live, but check the app's own fee page for your specific corridor, since it varies by amount and currency.

Phone: prepaid first, postpaid later

While you wait on the ARC, a prepaid SIM at the airport keeps you reachable. Pricing depends heavily on the data allowance and how many days you buy, and it moves; check the SKT, KT, or LG U+ counter pricing directly when you land rather than trusting a number printed months ago. Once your ARC clears, postpaid plans open up real monthly rates from the same three carriers. Again: ask at a carrier store, because plan pricing shifts and promotions come and go.

Health insurance

Once your contract starts, National Health Insurance kicks in and your school pays half. The rate is set nationally and changes yearly. The 2026 health insurance premium rate is 7.19 percent, up from 7.09 percent in 2025. Split between you and your employer, that's 3.595 percent each, so check your payslip against that percentage of your gross pay, not a flat won figure, since it moves with your salary.

We couldn't find a reliable current figure for handset deposits or hagwon housing stipends. Those vary too much by carrier, contract, and school to publish honestly. Ask your recruiter or your school directly, and get the answer in writing.

Common questions

How much does the ARC actually cost right now?
₩35,000. It went up from ₩30,000 on January 1, 2025, when immigration switched to chip-embedded cards.
How long will I really wait for my ARC?
It depends heavily on your office. Guides we found range from two to six weeks; check your specific office's current wait times on HiKorea rather than assuming.
How much of my paycheck goes to health insurance?
For 2026, the total premium rate is 7.19% of your gross pay, split evenly with your employer, so about 3.595% comes out of your pay.
Can I get a postpaid phone plan before my ARC arrives?
No. Postpaid contracts require the ARC. Use a prepaid SIM in the meantime.
