Gumi for English teachers: Samsung's satellite city and what it pays

Gumi is the Nakdong River city built around Samsung's Galaxy plant, with hagwon pay that trails Ulsan but a short, cheap rail hop to Daegu and a foreign teacher community that's easy to find once you land.

Gumi doesn't show up on many "where should I teach in Korea" lists, which is exactly why it's worth a look. The city sits on the Nakdong River halfway between Daegu and Gimcheon, on the Gyeongbu Expressway and Gyeongbu Line railway, the principal traffic routes of the country. At 404,691 people as of September 2024, it's the second largest city in Gyeongsangbuk-do, and it exists almost entirely because of one company.

Samsung's company town, more or less

Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and LG Display all have a manufacturing presence and R&D centers here, with electronics and IT manufacturing including smartphones as the primary industries. The Samsung plant has been running since 1980, and Samsung Electronics still runs the Gumi Plant as a global hub for mobile core technologies, leading development, manufacturing, and quality of the Galaxy line. Citywide, 1,772 companies employ over 80,000 workers, the largest scale in Korea. That matters for a teacher because it means a real base of working adults and company families who want English, not just a school-age market.

What the teaching scene actually looks like

This is a smaller teaching market than Daegu or Busan, which in practice means fewer postings and far fewer applicants for each one. Hagwon pay nationally runs in a broad band, and Gumi tends to sit in the middle to lower end of it rather than at the top. Cities built on heavy industry, like Ulsan with its shipyards and auto plants, can push per-hour corporate English rates higher because those companies pay well and want English on-site. Gumi doesn't have that same leverage, so expect your offer to land a notch under what a similar school in Ulsan might quote. What you get back is a shorter commute to a bigger city's opportunities, which we'll get to.

Rent: small deposits, small monthly numbers

Current listings around Gumi show the pattern clearly. A one-room officetel near Sandong was listed with a 3,000,000 won deposit and 330,000 won monthly rent. A detached-house studio room in Seonsan was listed at a 2,000,000 won deposit with 250,000 won rent. Those are individual listings, not a city average, but they give you the shape: small deposits and rent that a Seoul teacher would find startling in a good way.

The commute that actually changes your options

This is Gumi's real selling point. The city sits on the Daegyeong Line, a commuter rail that runs to Gyeongsan on Daegu's edge, with trains every 15 minutes at rush hour and every 20 minutes off-peak, a trip of about 48 minutes. For the city center itself, Gumi Station to Daegu Station runs faster still.

That means weekend trips, private tutoring hours, or just a bigger city's restaurants and foreign teacher meetups are a short, cheap ride away, not a reason to pick Daegu over Gumi.

Who it suits

Someone who wants to bank more of their paycheck than they would in Seoul or Busan, doesn't need a huge foreign teacher scene on their own doorstep, and doesn't mind a 27-minute train ride for a bigger night out. The foreign community here is smaller than Daegu's but easier to find than you'd expect, built partly around the Samsung and LG international staff who already live here. What we don't have good data on is exactly how hagwon pay in Gumi compares school to school. Ask your placement coordinator for current numbers on the specific school you're considering before you compare it to any other city.

Common questions

Is Gumi too small for a foreign teacher to have a social life?
It's smaller than Daegu or Busan, but the Daegyeong Line and KTX put you in Daegu in under 30 minutes, and Samsung and LG's international staff already support an expat scene within Gumi itself.
Does Gumi pay less than nearby Daegu or Ulsan?
It tends to sit in the middle of the national hagwon pay range rather than the top, and heavy-industry cities like Ulsan can pay more for corporate English hours, but Gumi's lower rent often closes much of that gap.
