The Category Countdown Game Works From Beginner to Advanced With Zero Prep
- Keep a running tally of used words in the corner of the board if your class is big enough that you'll lose track — you will, past round four.
- For quiet classes, drop the strict 5-second count and let it breathe; for loud classes, the countdown is what keeps order.
- Swap single words for full sentence patterns to drill grammar instead of vocabulary — same mechanic, no rule changes needed.
- If one team is clearly stronger, rebalance mid-game rather than waiting for the round to end. Nobody minds; they're too busy shouting answers.
- Works as a five-minute warmer or a full-period activity depending on how many categories you queue up.
