Pet classrooms in Korea: a discussion lesson on animals in schools, for middle schoolers who've already seen the hamster cage

  • Allergy check: Before you run this, know which students have pet allergies. If half the class does, adjust the scenario: "Some schools want this, but how do we solve the allergy problem?" Turns it into a problem-solving task instead of a debate.
  • The vacation question is the killer argument. When a student brings it up, don't solve it for them—ask the FOR side how they'd handle it. The back-and-forth is the practice.
  • If they freeze during debate: Give them sentence stems on the board. "One reason is…" / "I disagree because…" / "What about students who…?"
  • Grading, if you need to: Tally one point per complete English sentence during the debate, not per good idea. You're scoring output, not philosophy.
