Teacher notes — Grammar for Korean Speakers

Why Korean Students Drop 'It' and 'There' From English Sentences

  • Run the weather chain drill orally first, before students write anything — speaking the pattern under time pressure matters more than reciting the rule.
  • Row 3 in the article ("Study is important") is a lower priority fix than rows 1 and 2 — it's understandable, just not the pattern natives default to, so don't spend a whole class on it.
  • Expect students who score well on grammar tests to still make this mistake in free speech. That's normal; keep drilling in short bursts across several classes rather than one long session.
  • Good level: upper elementary through adult. Middle and high schoolers with test-prep backgrounds often "know" the rule but still make the error live, which makes them a good group for the speed drill.
