Teacher notes — Discussion & Debate
Weekend Chores at Home: Should Kids Get Paid for Helping Out?
- Run the first hand-count warm-up before you hand out the worksheet. A visible split makes the debate feel real right away.
- Keep question 4 (the "would never do" chore) light. It's usually the biggest laugh-getter and resets energy before the debate.
- Redirect any answer about exact family income or what a student's parents earn. Keep numbers hypothetical ("what's a fair amount," not "what does your family pay").
- Give quieter students the "I agree / disagree because" frame specifically. It lets them join the debate without starting from zero.
- For a stronger class: drop the sentence frames and ask students to write a 4-sentence closing argument for their team before the debate starts, then deliver it from memory.
