Universal Basic Income: a ready-to-run discussion lesson for advanced high school classes
- Pair students strategically. Put a strong speaker with a mid-level one; avoid pairing two shy students unless you want silence.
- The Gyeonggi program in 2021 was real but narrow: ₩250,000 per quarter for residents aged 24, funded by local taxes. It is not the same as national UBI, and results are still debated.
- Common errors to watch for: "people will be lazy" (article missing), "more better" (double comparative), "government have to pay" (subject-verb agreement).
- If a pair finishes early, send them to design a Korean pilot program: who gets it, how much, how long, what gets measured.
- Extension for fast finishers: Compare UBI to Korea's current unemployment insurance. Which system is fairer?
