Quick Ladder Spell-Off
- Prep time is zero. Draw the ladder while taking attendance, five rungs is usually enough for a 10 to 15 minute round.
- Keep rung words short at the bottom (cat, sun) so every student, even your weakest speller, can get on the board at least once.
- Assign rung numbers in advance for classes of 12 or more so students aren't crowding the marker.
- Have three or four backup words ready to extend the ladder when one team finishes fast and the other is still stuck.
- For a stronger class: replace single words with short sentences, or require the student to say a sentence frame ("I think ___ because ___") correctly before the rung unlocks.
