Teacher notes — Discussion & Debate
Pocket money and snack shops near school: should kids spend their own allowance on sweets?
- Pre-teach the six word bank terms with simple gestures or examples ("run out" = show an empty pocket) before students read the handout.
- Keep the discussion on spending habits and decision-making, not on how much money any student's family has. Redirect if a number comes up.
- Group size of 3-4 works best so every student has to speak; assign a "speaker" role to stop one student dominating.
- The final vote works better if you make students stand on one side of the room for "allowance" and the other for "parents pay," then interview one or two before they explain why.
- For a stronger class: have groups design a sample weekly allowance plan with three spending categories (snacks, saving, one "want" item) and present it in under one minute.
