Playground Rules at Recess: Who Gets the Ball?
- Keep the three vocabulary words (fair, turn, share) on the board for the whole class. Students lean on them more than any other prep.
- The corner-vote activity works best with at least 8 students so each corner has a small group, not one kid standing alone.
- Some classes argue past the bell. Let them. The off-topic noise is usually still in English.
- If a pair finishes early, add a fourth system: "Teacher decides." Students almost always dislike it, which restarts the debate.
- For a stronger class: ask them to design a recess rule for a brand new piece of equipment (a trampoline, a new slide) and defend it to the rest of the room.
