Teacher notes — Classroom Games

Nine Boxes: The Whiteboard Grid Game That Runs Itself in a Korean Hagwon

  • No materials needed beyond a whiteboard and marker — draw a fresh 3x3 grid each round, takes ten seconds.
  • Keep a running mental bank of 15-20 questions before starting so you're not pausing mid-round to think one up.
  • Enforce the no-repeat-answerer rule from round one or one student will carry the whole team and the others check out.
  • For classes under six students, skip this game — the grid needs enough players that turn order feels competitive.
  • Works well as a five-minute review at the start of class or a filler at the end; less well stretched past 20 minutes, since the novelty of the grid wears off.
