Teacher notes — Discussion & Debate
Lunch box trends and peer pressure: an elementary discussion lesson
- Pre-teach the word bank before opening the floor, or the discussion stalls on vocabulary instead of ideas.
- Keep the opening story generic (no real brand, no real student) so nobody in the room feels called out.
- If the class splits heavily to one side, assign the weaker side to a few students on purpose and have them argue it anyway. It keeps the debate honest.
- For a stronger class: add a second round where pairs have to agree on one shared rule for the whole class, then present it in two sentences using "We think the rule should be ___ because ___."
