Teacher notes — Discussion & Debate
Library Books: Should Kids Be Allowed to Choose Any Book?
- Run the show of hands before anyone explains their opinion. Seeing the split matters more than any explanation at this point.
- Keep pair talk short (one minute per side). Longer and students drift into Korean or lose focus on the task.
- The table of student arguments and pushback questions in the lesson is a safety net, not a script. Use it only if a group runs dry.
- Some students will say "I only read comics" almost every time. Treat it as a real answer worth discussing, not a joke.
- For a stronger class: skip the pair talk and go straight to a four-corners debate (strongly agree, agree, disagree, strongly disagree), and require each student to use a different reason than the student before them.
