Teacher notes — Discussion & Debate

Korea's Doctor Shortage Strike Gives High Schoolers a Debate They're Already Having at Home

  • Pre-teach "quota" and "resident" before reading — both get mispronounced almost every time.
  • Some students will already know more current details than you do; let them update the class, then steer back to the debate structure.
  • If a student mentions wanting to be a doctor, ask them directly which side they land on — it usually produces the strongest arguments in the room.
  • Take the vote twice (before and after) — the shift, or lack of it, is a good closing discussion in itself.
  • Keep the "for" and "against" table handy but don't read it aloud; let students generate the points themselves first.
