Teacher notes — Discussion & Debate
Korea Pays Couples to Have Babies, and Your High Schoolers Have Strong Opinions
- Higher-level classes can research their own city's current incentive amount for homework before this lesson — it changes yearly, so don't pre-supply a number you haven't checked.
- Expect at least one student to say they never want children; let that answer stand without pushing back, it's usually the most genuine moment in the debate.
- If the class is quiet on the debate, switch the assigned sides halfway through — arguing the opposite of what they actually believe often loosens students up.
- Keep the pro/con table visible on the board during the debate stage so weaker students have language to borrow.
