Teacher notes — Grammar for Korean Speakers
'I have dog': fixing the missing article in Korean English
- Keep this lesson to singular, countable nouns only. Uncountable nouns (water, rice, advice) are a separate lesson and will confuse the rule if mixed in today.
- Say the plain version out loud at the start of class: Korean nouns don't need a little word, English nouns almost always do.
- Walk the room during Step 2 and listen for silent skipping, some students write the sentence correctly but say it out loud without the article. Catch that early.
- Do not move to Step 4 until most of the class is fast and confident at Step 2, rushing this one backfires more than most grammar points.
- For a stronger class: add "the" versus "a" contrast pairs, like "I bought a book" then "The book was great," so students see how the choice changes mid-conversation.
