Four-Day School Week: A Discussion Lesson Your Korean High Schoolers Will Actually Care About

Teacher Notes

  • Timing matters: If you rush the group prep, the debate will flop. Give them the full fifteen minutes and circulate. Push weak arguments: "That's true, but how do you answer the parent group?"
  • The employer group needs help. Most students have never thought from this angle. Prompt: "If students are free Fridays, does that help or hurt a cafe owner? Why?"
  • Let it get messy. If two students argue in Korean for ten seconds, that's fine. They're testing their logic before they translate it.
  • Vote variance is your goal. If the vote is 18-0, you didn't create enough tension. Next time, assign one group to argue the opposite of what they believe.
  • Extension for fast finishers: Have each group write one rule for their proposed schedule (e.g., "No after-school academies on Fridays" or "Parents must approve the trial in writing"). Post the rules on the board.
