Cutting military budgets to fund public services: a discussion lesson for Korean high schoolers who know exactly what's at stake
- Let the boys talk about conscription. They know more than you do about what service actually looks like, and shutting that down makes the debate feel fake.
- Don't correct students who say "free" healthcare or education. In this context they mean government-funded, and stopping to explain tax incidence kills the momentum.
- The budget table is simplified hard. Real Korean budget categories are far more granular, and welfare includes pensions. If a student calls that out, say "Yes, this is simplified so we can actually make a decision in ten minutes."
- If one side is obviously winning, switch a strong speaker to the other team mid-lesson. Tell them their job is now to make the best case they can for the side they disagreed with. It's a better skill anyway.
- Watch for the student who says "just tax rich people more" as a way to avoid the trade-off. That's a separate question. The task here is: given a fixed budget, what gets cut?
