Teacher notes — Discussion & Debate

Class Pet Care Rota: Who Should Feed the Fish on Weekends?

  • Pre-teach "rota," "responsibility," and "consistent" before pair work. Don't assume students know them from Korean class routines.
  • Pair a confident speaker with a quieter one for the sentence-frame stage. It raises talk time across the whole room.
  • Save the class vote for the very end. Voting early kills the discussion, since students stop listening once they've picked a side.
  • If a group finishes early, have them write a third option (like "two students share each weekend") using the same sentence frames.
  • For a stronger class: skip the vote and instead have each group write one classroom rule that would make the rota actually work, then compare rules across groups.
