Banning junk food in schools: a discussion lesson your Korean middle schoolers already have opinions about
- Walk the room during prep and push for specific reasons, not "it's bad for you." Make them say how or why.
- When students switch sides, some will complain it is unfair or too hard. Tell them that is the point — arguing both sides means they actually understand the issue.
- If the debate stalls, feed them a prompt: "What about students who can't afford the healthy food in the cafeteria?" or "Should parents decide, or the school?"
- The exit question sorts who engaged. If they write "the first side because I believe it," they missed the lesson. If they write "the second side because we had heard the other team's points," they got it.
