Introduction/Comments I¡¯m almost finished with my one year contract at Sujeong and I have really enjoyed it. After two years in Korea, I¡¯m ready to go back to the US and spend some time with my family and friends. My experience in Korea has been great and I plan on coming back after a few months to teach in a different area, hopefully Busan. If you are interested in teaching at a number of small schools in the countryside and having the freedom to create your own lessons, than this job may be for you.

Sujeong Elementary school is in a very small town named Songnisan. Currently there are only two foreigners living there and nearly no western restaurants, but it has a lot of natural beauty since it is the home to Songnisan National Park, which is a popular tourist sight. I chose to live in Boeun, a nearby town that has more foreigners (about and more restaurant options. I believe that you can chose to live in either place, but Songnisan is even further than Boeun from the closest cities, Cheongju and Daejeon, which are still about an hour away. It takes about twenty minutes to get from Boeun to Songnisan. In the cooler weather I took a bus to school and when the weather was warmer, I took my scooter. Boeun also has more bus times to go to and come back from other places in Korea.

You start your day at 8:30 and end at 4:30. For this job you will teach English at Sujeong School as well as four other SMALL schools in the country. Most of the English classes both at Sujeong school and the away schools that I travel to are taught in the morning into the afternoon. The classes last from 40 to 60 minutes, but you only teach each grade at each school once or twice a month. The class can be as few as two students or as many as 20, but most classes are between five to ten. I know this sounds really weird, but the kids do retain the information and it has made me enjoy teaching here. Seeing different faces everyday makes the job more exciting.

You have a Korean co-teacher and you can teach with them in the same classroom combining two grades, but we have been splitting the classes and teaching separately. Doing this gives a better student to teacher ratio, allows you to create lessons more tailored to their level and gives you more control of the class. I prefer it this way and don¡¯t find the language barrier to be too difficult.

For the classes that I teach at Sujeong and the away schools a theme is provided then I make my own lessons based on that theme. Themes have included Animals, Science, Social Studies, Math, Music, and Sports. I have used the internet for help in coming up with information and even some power points and worksheets: although, I have created my own and have enjoyed doing so.

Overall, I have really enjoyed my experience in this school. If you have any questions please don¡¯t hesitate to send me an e-mail. I would be happy to help.
