Mystery Word: The Whiteboard Guessing Game That Scales From Colors to Abstract Nouns
- Ban "what," "why," and "how" questions outright at the start — they're the ones that break the yes/no format, and kids default to them out of habit.
- For quieter classes, assign question order (go around the room) instead of open hands. It stops the same three students from asking everything.
- Keep a running tally in one whiteboard color and the "yes" answers underlined in another — visual learners track the word faster and it cuts down "wait, what did she say?" moments.
- If a student picks an impossible word (nobody knows "isotope" in English or Korean), you're allowed to veto and ask for another. Say so before round one starts, not after.
- For mixed-level classes, let weaker students ask the yes/no questions and stronger students do the final guessing — everyone's working at their edge, not their ceiling.
