Having a TESOL cerificate is always beneficial, but there are many positions available in Korea for teachers without one. My typical advice for first year teachers in Korea is to teach for a year, and then if you decide you want to teach ESL for longer you can do your ESL/TESOL/TEFL certificate between contracts (possible in Thailand, Prague, ect) Although, like I mentioned earlier, having an ESL cerificate can only help - but it is just not necessary for teaching in Korea for a year.
