I need some clarification with the criminal background check. Do I do a state check or federal or both?

From what I have found on the internet a state check will suffice, however I am looking for a clear answer indicating so. I don't want to do the wrong background check.

Please advise on what exactly I need for the criminal background check for a Michigan, US resident.
