Dear Wendy,
The response to your question is Yes and No.
Yes: Some schools prefer bilingual teachers that can communicate in both Korean and English, and possibly for managerial positions. Your job responsibilities can range from teaching, native English teacher management, parent consultation all which will allow you to utilize your bilingual skills.
No: There are many Korean natives that study abroad to study English for several years. Their English is not proficient as a native speaker. Majority of parents send their children to English academies as they are not fluent. They also have no ability to differentiate whether or not the teacher is a native English speaker or someone who had simply studied abroad for several years. Therefore, to avoid guessing, they would prefer to send their children to a school with teachers who speak only English.
We deal with schools that specifically prefer bilingual Korean overseas applicants, so please do not feel discouraged.
Sincerely,
Park English Team
